Stress-relief annealing in Lodz
Stress-relief annealing at ECAD
- Furnace chamber

- Application
- reducing stresses after welding and machining
- Location
- ECAD, Lodz, Elektronowa 6
We carry out stress-relief annealing of metal parts in our own furnace with a 1000 × 1200 × 800 mm chamber. It reduces residual stresses after welding and machining before the part moves on to finish machining. We quote based on your enquiry, from single pieces to series.
We can combine cutting, bending, welding and annealing in a single order, at the same plant. See full-service production.
Stress-relief annealing in a 1000 × 1200 × 800 mm chamber furnace
Stress-relief annealing is a heat treatment that reduces residual stresses in metal. In structural steel, it is carried out below the Ac1 transformation temperature, so unlike hardening, the steel does not undergo a phase transformation. The furnace is located at our plant at ul. Elektronowa 6 in Lodz. Whether your part fits, including by weight, will be verified during quoting. We purchased the furnace under an EU-co-funded project.

When we use stress-relief annealing: after welding, after cutting and bending, before finish machining
After welding
Manual welding or robotic welding on FANUC robots introduces residual stresses into the material. We reduce them through stress relieving in our furnace.

Laser cutting, sheet metal bending and rough machining also introduce stresses into the material. Stress relieving reduces the risk that they will later appear as part distortion.

Sheet metal after cutting out parts. Before finish machining
We stress-relieve the part before CNC milling or surface grinding to size to reduce the risk of shape distortion after finishing. Stress relieving can alter the shape of the part, which is why we machine it to size afterwards, not before.

Stress-relief annealing in the production chain: from welding to inspection
We can combine annealing with other production stages, for example when manufacturing a welded structure.
Welding or rough machining
We weld parts manually and on FANUC robots, having previously cut, bent or machined them.

Finish machining
After stress relieving, we can mill or perform surface grinding to size, depending on what the part requires.

We can verify dimensions after stress relieving and finish machining using a Scantech NimbleTrack-C Gen2 3D scanner and a Mitutoyo height gauge.

What to send for a stress-relief annealing quote
We quote based on your enquiry, not from a price list. State the material, dimensions and weight of the part, as well as which production stages the order covers, such as cutting, bending, welding or CNC machining.
The order price will depend on:
- material, dimensions and weight of the part (whether it fits in the furnace)
- quantity
- lead time

Questions about stress-relief annealing
What is stress-relief annealing?
Stress-relief annealing, commonly known as steel stress relieving, is a heat treatment that reduces residual stresses in metal. These arise, for example, during welding, cutting, or rough machining. At ECAD, we stress-relieve workpieces in our own furnace at our plant at Elektronowa 6 in Lodz.
When should stress-relief annealing be used?
When required by a drawing or specification, or when the workpiece is still to be machined to size: after welding, as well as after cutting and rough machining, prior to finishing (CNC milling or surface grinding). Stress relieving reduces the risk that stresses will later manifest as workpiece distortion.
How does stress-relief annealing differ from other types of heat treatment?
Different types of heat treatment serve different purposes. Hardening increases steel hardness, whereas stress-relief annealing reduces residual stresses, e.g. after welding. At ECAD, we perform it in our own furnace.
How large a workpiece can fit in the furnace?
The chamber of the stress-relief annealing furnace at ECAD measures 1000 × 1200 × 800 mm. Provide the dimensions and weight of the workpiece in your enquiry. We will check whether it fits when preparing your quote.
Can I order annealing together with other production stages?
Yes. At ECAD, we can combine annealing in a single order with cutting, bending, welding, CNC machining, or 3D inspection, at the same plant.
How much does workpiece annealing cost?
We do not have a price list; we prepare quotes based on your enquiry. The price depends on the workpiece dimensions and weight, material, quantity, and lead time.
